Benefits of higher education in Canada

Applicants choose Canada for their future studies because:

  • Diplomas from all Canadian universities are highly regarded around the world.
  • Students are legally allowed to combine study and work, no permits are needed.
  • The price of education is 2-3 times lower than in the leading universities of the USA and England.
  • After graduation, foreign students can legally work in Canada for 1-3 years.

All educational institutions have a practical orientation. Students gain a huge amount of knowledge and skills. They become excellent specialists who can be offered a job even before graduation.

The sequence of actions for enrollment

To get into the desired university in Canada, you need to study all the information available to applicants and act strictly according to the plan.

Choose a specialization

Each university has list of subjects to be studied. It is important to study individual programs, decide on the desired direction. It is also worth looking at the rating of the most in-demand professions.

Choose the right universities

It is important to study the offers and programs of all universities. This will allow you to choose the right institutions, and start preparing for admission.

Choose a program

It is worth analyzing your knowledge in all subjects, highlighting your weaknesses and strengths. This makes it easier to find the best program for you that meets your requirements.

Register in the electronic application system

You can apply to several universities for different programs at the same time. Acceptance of documents ends 6-12 months before the start of the academic semester. There are universities with floating application deadlines. It is important to submit documents on time, as it increases the chance of admission. All requirements are available on the websites of universities. Application for admission is submitted online. In paper form, it takes much longer. Each province and city has its requirements, they are also available on the websites.

Prepare documents for the application

The level of competition during admission depends on the university’s ranking. The list of required documents is publicly available. Some universities require recommendations, motivational letters, or creative portfolios. It is important for them to see that the applicant is genuinely interested in studying. In certain universities, there is a practice of interviewing applicants.

Document confirming previous education

The admissions committee makes a decision based on the applicant’s high school diploma or bachelor’s degree. If the applicant doesn’t have the document at the time of submission, they can provide a transcript with their current grades. The diploma can be submitted later, once received.

GPA

The grade point average (GPA) of a diploma or certificate reflects a student’s academic performance, which is a key criterion for admission to an educational institution. There are several formulas for calculating GPA, and these specifics may be outlined on the university’s website. If no specific instructions are provided, the applicant should use the formula that results in the highest score.

Motivational letter

It is important to write an essay explaining why the student is attracted to the university’s program and how it will help them achieve their life goals. The admissions committee is interested in seeing the future student’s motivation, readiness to work, and eagerness to learn new things, ultimately becoming a top-notch specialist. They should align with the spirit of the institution and share its views on the learning process. We recommend reviewing successful motivational letter examples, drafting a few versions, setting them aside, and then revisiting them. Consultants from Canschool—Canadian educators collaborating with various universities and colleges—assist students in refining this aspect.

Letter of recommendation

Though not frequently required, it’s better to prepare a recommendation from an employer or professor.

Take the TOEFL or IELTS test to confirm English proficiency

This test is mandatory and demonstrates the applicant’s level of English proficiency. High test scores are achieved through consistent language practice with Canadian teachers at Canschool.

Prepare a portfolio, take other tests—exams

Preparing a portfolio and taking specific tests may be required for admission to certain specialities. For instance, future designers or architects should have a creative portfolio. Those planning to study music must take a “live” exam in front of a committee, sometimes even online. This also applies to acting and other creative programs.

Pay the application review fee

For the chosen university’s committee to review an applicant’s submission, a fee of CAD 75–150 must be paid. Payment is made when submitting the application, and detailed instructions are sent to the provided email.

Apply and wait for the university’s response

The application package can be prepared independently following the university’s checklist. Specialist services are also an option. If a Canadian university accepts the applicant, they will receive an offer letter. This offer becomes final after the student passes their final exams, provided they achieve the necessary grades.

During this period, the applicant should maintain close communication with the university’s faculty and representatives to clarify any details.

Disadvantages or peculiarities of higher education institutions in Canada

Disadvantages or peculiarities of higher education institutions in Canada

  1. Cost. The price of tuition is lower than in the U.S. but remains out of reach for many.
  2. Conservatism, religiosity. Almost all universities have separate electives on the history of religions. Much time is devoted to the study of the Bible, and Christianity. Universities adhere to the same paradigm of education that was laid down at the time of their foundation.
  3. Lack of opportunity to get a medical education. In Canada, a foreign student cannot study medicine. This field is closed. The exception is colleges with nursing programmes. Students can study surgery, and medical science, but only in agreement with the government of both countries and only in a rare exception.

Canadian study grants and financial assistance

Undergraduate students can expect to receive financial aid for tuition if they enrol at a university after graduation from high school/college. There is an option for aid to arrive within 2 years of graduation. To qualify for the grant, an undergraduate must have:

  • high level of certificate;
  • a score of 7.0 or above on the IELTS language proficiency test.

Universities also sponsor successful students, supporting them from undergraduate to postgraduate study. There are separate scholarship programmes. Financial aid at the provincial level, such as in Ontario, should be considered separately.

Life in Canada: Pros and Cons

A sociological survey was conducted among immigrants living in Canada and several other countries to assess how satisfied people are with their new place of residence. Canada ranked 9th out of 64 countries, which is an excellent result.

However, Canada ranked 43rd on the same list in terms of financial satisfaction. Many respondents noted that even with a stable income, it may not be enough to maintain their accustomed standard of living.

Pros

A picturesque, prosperous, and economically developed country welcomes those who have decided to build a career or simply stay for a while. There are several significant advantages that attract migrants to Canada.

Developed economy and stable political situation

Canada is one of the leading countries with a developed economy. This undoubtedly has a positive impact on the lives of ordinary citizens. The industry is actively growing and operating steadily, with vast natural resources, and there are no concerns about the country’s internal transportation system.

New territories are constantly being developed within the country, specialists from other nations are being recruited, and recent university graduates quickly find prestigious jobs.

Friendly immigration policy

Many consider Canada one of the top countries to emigrate to. There are numerous accessible and legal ways to do so. Some people reunite with family members or relocate for professional reasons. New programs for future immigrants are constantly being introduced. Various provinces offer specific opportunities, actively seeking specialists to work in certain industries. All information is publicly available, and the legal department at Canschool can provide detailed consultations on this matter.

Healthcare

Canada’s healthcare system is rightly regarded as one of the most efficient in the world. Generally, all essential services are provided free of charge to citizens. If serious and long-term treatment is required, mandatory health insurance covers all costs. Medical centers are equipped with the latest technology, and doctors must first obtain an education, then pass mandatory certification before they begin practicing.

Safety

Police statistics show that the rates of theft and hooligan attacks are very low, with incidents occurring only in large cities. In Canada, there is no practice of “deals” with police officers or bribery.

Climate and stunning nature

The vast territory of the country is like a natural park, with landscapes so breathtaking that they leave you in awe. Mountains, lakes, deciduous and coniferous forests, tundra—this beauty isn’t just nearby, it’s all around. Canada has a large number of national parks and protected areas. People are accustomed to preserving and caring for nature.

Maintaining balance

This refers to the balance between time spent at work and at home. Canadians work an average of 41.6 hours per week, which is a global average. People enjoy a healthy work-life balance, properly dividing their time between work and rest.

Multicultural and diverse space

Canada is a multinational country, often referred to as a nation of immigrants. Many cultures, nationalities, and traditions coexist here. People accept and understand each other.

Politeness and willingness to help

Helping a passerby is the norm, not an exception. Apologizing for any inconvenience is a way of life for every Canadian. Everything is done with a smile and ease. If a visitor gets lost, people not only give directions but may even walk them to their destination—and this is normal behavior.

Cons

High taxes

One of the main drawbacks of Canada is its taxes. On average, Canadians pay 40% or more of their earnings in taxes to the government. These taxes help develop healthcare and science, making life comfortable and safe. They also fund important government projects, pensions, and social benefits. It’s important to note that the higher the salary, the higher the taxes.

Long job search period

Canadians typically search for jobs for 6 to 9 months, which is the national average. Employers take their time and scrutinize each candidate very carefully, as they are able to offer good salaries.

Winter

When discussing Canada, it’s essential to consider the climate. Winter lasts a long time and is characterized by severe conditions. Snowfall can begin in Calgary even in August. Toronto suffers from extreme cold, while Vancouver may go years without experiencing such harsh winters.

Expensive flights

Canadian citizens are accustomed to high prices for flights to and from the country, but immigrants may be unpleasantly surprised. It’s important to note that even domestic flights can be quite expensive.

Nuances of the healthcare system

While the system operates at a high level, patients must pay for doctor visits or emergency services themselves. They also need to cover the costs of dental and ophthalmology services. Another downside is the long wait times for doctor appointments and for receiving tests and treatments.

High prices for goods and services

When preparing for immigration, it’s important to consider that the cost of certain goods and services will be relatively high. Mobile phone and internet services tend to be pricier. Housing is a significant expense; prices in large cities have risen to the point where few can afford to buy a home or apartment, making rental options necessary.

Additionally, beauty salon bills can be quite substantial. Labour from technical staff is highly paid. There are no separate city services for home maintenance, so you need to call a plumber or electrician separately and pay for their services.

Social responsibility and civic duty

Immigrants often struggle to get used to the fact that neighbours will calmly call the police if they hear screams from across the street or see a suspicious person. A third party is always involved in resolving disputes. Neighbours are not judged or seen as snitches; this is considered an active social stance.

Widespread tolerance

In Canada, it’s best to avoid bluntness, as there is a great fear of offending someone from a minority group or a different race or nationality with words or even gestures. It’s important to maintain a friendly attitude toward everyone.

The system of colleges in Canada emerged in the middle of the 20th century, when the government came to the conclusion that the country needed not only masters and bachelors, but also specialists to ensure the smooth operation of industry and services. It is enough to study for only 2-3 years, and a master’s degree can be completed in 1 year. Canadian colleges provide narrow specialisation and this format of education attracts not only locals, but also graduates from all over the world.

After graduating from college, you can continue your studies at a higher education institution if you wish. Now there are more than 150 colleges in the country, where you can get the most popular speciality. Their graduates work in IT, construction, develop their own business, achieve success in finance and many other industries.

How to choose a college in Canada

When choosing a college, applicants consider:

  1. Specialisation
  2. Location.

College can be of technical and social orientation. It is necessary to study the rating level of the educational institution for the desired specialisation. The website of each college has all the necessary information. Canschool specialists can advise you on admission.

The difference between colleges and universities

The main thing that distinguishes a college from a university is the constant practical orientation of training. Students learn the skills they need for work, while at university up to 60 per cent of their study time is spent studying the theoretical part. Colleges also provide internships in the speciality, which is very much appreciated by students.

There are a number of other differences between colleges and universities:

  1. The price of tuition at a college in Canada is lower than at a university by 30-40%.
  2. It is easier for graduates to find a job after college. Recruiters prefer to choose graduates with work experience that can be gained during studies, and internships.
  3. College applicants have fewer requirements than university applicants.

College Programmes of Study in Canada

Canada’s colleges offer more than 500 degree programmes that allow you to pursue a variety of careers. College graduates can enter the 3rd year of higher education, continuing their studies on the chosen programme. In some colleges, there are postgraduate programmes, that can be compared to a master’s degree.

If an applicant has a poor command of English, he/she can take a preparatory course and then enter the college.

The University of Toronto is the number one university in Canada according to all existing rankings and has been in the leading position for many years. For any Canadian schoolchild to enter UofT is a dream, and to enter with a scholarship is a pipe dream!

Many parents of high school students do not even know about this possibility, but we at CanSchool not only know all the scholarship programs available to applicants, but also take a professional approach to collecting documents and proper submission.

The $180,000 University of Toronto International Scholar Award – University of Toronto International Scholar Award is an outstanding achievement for which applicants compete in an open competition. Since the CanSchool team helped Nastia prepare her application package for UofT, we will be able to use this experience for all CanSchool students!

Scholarship

We sincerely congratulate Nastya on her scholarship to the University of Toronto and are proud of our joint victory!
